It is the question we are asked most at surveys. Both materials make excellent patios. The right choice depends on your house, how you use the garden and how much upkeep you want.
Porcelain
Porcelain paving is dense, consistent and barely absorbs water, so it resists stains and moss. It suits modern houses and clean lines, and it looks the same in ten years as it does on day one. It needs a specialist adhesive and careful cutting, which adds labour.
Natural stone
Sandstone, limestone and slate each weather in their own way. Stone softens over time and sits comfortably next to older brick and planting. It needs sealing and an occasional clean, but many people like the way it ages.
What matters more than the slab
- A sub-base dug deep enough and compacted in layers
- A fall of around 1 in 60 so water runs away from the house
- Proper drainage at the low edge
- Joints filled with the right compound for the material
Get those right and either material will last for decades. We bring samples of both to every patio survey so you can see them in your own light.
